Dynamic Criteria Map - Personal Comp Tale 10

This is kind of a reflection on the Dynamic Criteria Map project, in a way, but it's different than what I wrote for my actual introduction paper. I suppose I just wanted to say, in a less formal way, that I was surprised how the values and beliefs of an instructor can be so deeply rooted in the assignments and syllabus. However, with my mentor, this was entirely intentional. So, for those of us just starting out, will our "values" and "beliefs" be intentional or just a haphazard mess? I think it's interesting to see how my values and beliefs align with B's and how I have a few things that I value on my own as well--obviously everyone is different, but it was really the similarities that surprised me. Great job MCF giving me a mentor that I can relate to! But really, this project helped me look at things a bit differently and I think that's important.

  1. The similarities between myself and my mentor were surprising to me as well as I did coding for my criteria map. I hadn't thought that we placed values on the same areas, so it was nice to see our values line up as the map formed. I hadn't ever really thought about the impacts of an individual's beliefs and values on the writing program as a whole. It was interesting to see where the stress fell with all of the mentors in our in class activity. While we all have our unique interests, it's important that we take on the important goals of the program we are teaching in and allow them to modify our values to fit the teaching contexts.

  2. One thing I found interesting was that my mentors values were much more palpable during classes, rather than in her documents. Most of her documents fulfilled the course objectives, while her class lectures, assignments, and powerpoints revealed more of her personality. I also noticed her version of an assignment sheet is exactly the style I appreciate most: one page, short description, bullet point requirements, etc. Basically, my mentor and I go together like "peas and carrots" to quote Forrest Gump.

  3. I really want to find the time soon (this weekend) to informally list out my own values and beliefs and see how my plans for 104 correspond. My mentor's values were consistent in her syllabus and her classroom, and I think it's such a good thing to consider—are my assignments communicating those values to the students? I don't like to obscure anything from students; I like them to see purpose and structure. Guess I will find out how I'm doing with that during the workshop on Tuesday!

  4. Agreed. I gave this my mentor. She was also very interested. She was sure about what she values and believes. But this time, the values and beliefs observed by peer . And the peer knows the results. This is something I will be interested in a future according to my teaching.
